Lefdal Mine Datacenter (LMD) offers one of the most cost effective, secure, flexible and sustainable datacenter solutions in Europe.

COST EFFECTIVE - LMD offer one of the lowest total cost of operations (TCO) in Europe. Compared to other data centers one can expect to reduce the cost with 60% for high density solutions.

RENEWABLE POWER AT LOW COST - The power price in Norway is leading low in Europe. In addition, LMD has leading low power prices within Norway. Long term power contracts are available. 100% of the power production in the region is renewable and the transmission loss is at an absolute minimum.
LEADING GREEN - LMD is one of Europe’s greenest data centers. Sustainability is at the core of our mission and values. In addition to running on renewable power and operating with world class low PUE, the CO2 emission is zero and the footprint limited. The mine is already there, and the material required to build out capacity is low. The main part of the facility is not visible to the surroundings. There is no need for evaporative systems for cooling and the WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is zero. LMD is currently investing in infrastructure to reuse all the heated water for marine food production close to the facility - https://www.sjomatstaden.no/en/home. The result will be a production of 15.000 ton salmon/year and 6 mill smolt/year. The production is a world leading sustainable fish farming model. The aim is to go from close to zero in emissions (before reusing the heated water) to being carbon negative as a “circular sustainability model”. LMD is adding 60 MW (scalable to 100 MW+) power capacity to the facility with two new 132 kV lines. In this process we have decided to acquire the 30 MW transformers and locate them inside the mine. The power is from there transported in 22 kV lines close to the customer area with distributed and local transformation to 400 kV in each dedicated customer area. This will reduce transmission loss to a minimum. The power in the area of LMD is one of the most renewable power sources in the world measured on CO2 emission per actual consumed power - https://app.electricitymap.org/map?solar=false&remote=true&wind=false (region – Middle of Norway). LMD is a member of ICT Norway. ICT Norway is a proud signatory of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, committing to the European Green Deal ambitions and to make data centers climate neutral by 2030. The goals set forward in the pact is and will be a part of our solution. LMD is fully committed to achieving the targets set forward in the Climate Neutral Data Centre pact.

SCALABILITY - LMD has the possibility of building out 120.000 m2 of whitespace in the facility and housing up to 200 MW capacity. With our modular design, time to market is starting at 6-8 weeks. Customers can reserve space and capacity for future growth.

HIGH DENSITY - LMD uses the cold fjord next to the facility for cooling. The cold sea water interacts with heat exchangers and a closed freshwater circuit providing 2N chilled water under the raised floor. Inline cooling is used for transforming the cold water to cold air enabling densities up to 50 KW/rack with air cooling. Using direct-liquid cooling density available is up to 100 KW/rack.

FLEXIBILITY - LMD can facilitate all known concepts for white space solutions and the facility structure enables a streamlined solution for IT containers in different shapes and sizes in a cost-effective way. LMD can customize power density, temperature, humidity, operational equipment, tier levels and all related services. Some of the larger contracts won are pure built to suite solutions. These services are perfect for customers requiring between 1 and 10 MW with a range of infrastructure form factors offered. Our pay-as-you-grow approach to wholesale data center space means one can gradually occupy space as one need it, which means lower risk – whether you are a systems integrator or managed service provider with changing customer requirements.

SECURITY - LMD offers one of Europe’s most secure data center facilities. The data center is an underground mountain hall facility with leading infrastructure. Integrated point monitoring and access control system. Our security concept covers the whole internal site and the surrounding external areas, based on acknowledged industry standards such as ISO 14001/9001/27001, Uptime Tier III, IBM Level 3 and EN 56000.

WHY NORWAY - In a world of rapidly increasing carbon emissions from the ICT industry, Norway offers a highly sustainable solution. One foresees a significant surplus in the production and extremely competitive price forecasts for the years to come. Long term power prices in Norway are expected to be the lowest in the Nordics.
LMD uses regional suppliers sharing the same values on green certifications and reducing CO2 emissions as much as possible. LMD is certified ISO 14001 defining the criteria for an environmental management system, assuring company management and employees, as well as customers and external stakeholders, that environmental impact is being measured and improved.

LMD is now running at 15 MW capacity with customers like Daimler, Infosys, Kyndryl and Sigma2 (national supercomputers and storage infrastructure for research and education in Norway). Total capacity at the facility is 200 MW.

LMD has over the past years built an organization handling complex build outs and we are proud of our service delivery to our customers and other parties in our eco system.
LMD is using the same software that we are running on the existing data centers in the group, as our management software. In addition, Landax – our QMS solution – is integrated as a tool for quality management, reviews and control functions, health, safety, facility, risks analysis and support. These tools help us ensure that we comply to all laws and regulations and applicable standards for our business, and to make sure maintenance programs are well planned and performed according to customer requirements.
LMD has a strong relationship with our selected suppliers. Regional suppliers are trained and there are clear guidelines and defined expectations on their delivery to LMD and to our customers.

Many of the components in our deliveries are standardized. Our part-owner, Rittal, is a preferred supplier of pre-fitted IT containers and turn-key data hall solutions. This secures consistency, short lead times and high quality in our customer solutions.

In addition to standard deliveries, LMD offer fully customizable, bespoke wholesale data center options providing greater choice for those wanting control over the designs, infrastructure, commercials, services and security for their data center (built to suit). LMD has experience with several large deployments for customers delivered according to expectations or above.

Project Management is done with highly experienced staff and with preferred software based on experience with building out data center capacity. Design & Engineering and own solutions is one of LMD’s core areas of expertise. The scope of work for engineering varies between project types. From not having design responsibility to full responsibility (Design & Build).

LMD customers would support the nomination. Our approach is to have fewer and large customers in our facility. This is one of the strategic decisions taken to secure customer satisfaction during implementation and throughout the contract term, but also to secure their needed growth. We maintain the customer relationship on daily basis. All our customers have increased their capacity at Lefdal Mine Datacenter after the initial deployment or indicated that they will do so.

LMD measure customer satisfaction according to the ISO 9001standard. Based on customer expectation we have identified and chosen characteristics to secure a valid measurement. Research is done with both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of the analysis in the Report of Customer Satisfaction and possible recommendations that can help LMD to identify areas for improvement. The report also identifies possible causes that contribute to customer dissatisfaction. Information that affects the elements of customer satisfaction is then reviewed by management and results are delivered to responsible persons in the organization in order to take actions that will lead to the needed improvement.
