Lefdal Mine Datacenter (LMD) is one of Europe’s greenest data centers. Sustainability is at the core of our mission and values. The data center was designed to be a leading green data center – The Norwegian Solution. The facility runs on short travelled renewable power. The mine was already there, and the material required to build out capacity is far less than building a traditional data center. The main part of the facility is not visible to the surroundings. There is no need for evaporative systems for cooling and the WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is zero. The power utilized by the facility has one of the lowest CO2 emissions in the world of actual power consumed - (region – Middle of Norway). LMD uses cold water from the nearby fjord for cooling. Not only does this enable a efficient cooling solution with leading low PUE (1.10), it also allows LMD to reuse the heated water leading to a carbon negative operation of the data center.

Power generation is close to the facility and there is limited loss in grid transmission. The mine itself requires limited material for build out of capacity and the fjord next to the mine offers a leading cooling solution. The cooling solution is based on stable supply of cold seawater transported in a circulation system to heat exchangers. The heat exchangers interact between the cold sea water and a closed freshwater circuit – pressurized system. The freshwater circuit transports chilled water to the containers/data halls, where the cold water is transformed to cold air, cooling down the hardware. The heated return air is transformed to heated water and then transported back to the heat exchangers where the cold sea water is heated and transported out of the facility.

LMD uses regional suppliers sharing the same values on green certifications and reducing CO2 emissions as much as possible. LMD is certified ISO 14001 defining the criteria for an environmental management system, assuring company management and employees, as well as customers and external stakeholders, that environmental impact is being measured and improved. LMD is now running at 15 MW capacity with customers like Daimler, Infosys, Kyndryl and Sigma2 (national supercomputers and storage infrastructure for research and education in Norway). Total capacity at the facility is 200 MW.

LMD is currently investing in infrastructure to reuse all the heated water for marine food production close to the facility - The result will be a production of 15.000 ton salmon/year and 6 mill smolt/year. The production is a world leading sustainable fish farming model. The aim is to go from close to zero in emissions (before reusing the heated water) to being carbon negative as a “circular sustainability model”.

LMD is a member of ICT Norway. ICT Norway is a proud signatory of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, committing to the European Green Deal ambitions and to make data centers climate neutral by 2030. The goals set forward in the pact is and will be a part of our solution. LMD is fully committed to achieving the targets set forward in the Climate Neutral Data Centre pact.

LMD is currently adding power capacity to the facility with two 132 kV lines. In this process we have decided to acquire the 30 MW transformers and locate them inside the mine. The power is transported in 22 kV lines close to the customer with distributed and local transformation to 400 kV in each dedicated customer area. This will reduce transmission loss to a minimum.

LMD work in close partnership with our suppliers to increase efficiency in the cooling infrastructure and to reduce footprint and materials need to deploy capacity.

LMD also engage with hardware providers seeking to bridge customer needs with efficient hardware solutions. There are suppliers in the market with leading products reducing footprint of hardware and increasing efficiency in compute output over power – i.e. Ampere.
