Energy Savings as a Service (ESaaS) is a disruptive service offering provided by Vertiv that will drastically alter the way large telecom and data centre operators optimise their critical infrastructure. In 2019 Vertiv entered an agreement with Telefónica, a multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Madrid, Spain, and is one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world. This ESaaS contract involved designing, investing, implementing, operating and maintaining this operators infrastructure to achieve energy savings to benefit both organisations. Vertiv is fully financing the project, providing complete support from consultancy and execution to 24/7 monitoring and maintenance services, requiring no capital expenditure (CAPEX) from Telefónica; essentially eliminating the need to buy equipment which would traditionally be the case. For Telefónica, this effort is part of their goal of having net zero emissions by 2025 in their main operations and to become the most efficient telecommunications network in the market in terms of energy and carbon intensity.

The first part of the project that took on this ESaaS model was the construction of the Telefónica Concepción building in Madrid, Spain, completed in October 2019. Considered to be one of the most significant buildings for Telefónica Spain, the Concepción building provides fibre-optic access to more than 100,000 households and bears significant energy saving results. What’s more, the building includes two main data centre rooms and network hubs that aggregate all network traffic. In fact, this equipment demonstrates Vertiv’s solution, which includes the installation of cutting-edge cooling and power equipment as well as a monitoring system which allows the online analysis and mitigation of all critical devices. The data is then collated from these devices to support pre-emptive measures and decisions. The ongoing remote monitoring provides Vertiv with a wealth of Big Data Analytics. It is combined with data from the Spanish Grid, and once again reported back to Telefónica every month to outline energy efficiencies and savings made.

Now 2 years on from when the project began, Vertiv’s proud to report a reduction of Telefónica’s energy consumption within only 3 months, already amounting to a 525 kW reduction, which continues to be maintained even after two years of deployment. So far, the Concepción building has saved Telefónica 230,000 € from their site’s electricity bill. The largest energy usage (from the data centre cooling rooms) has also been reduced up to 85%. By applying the disruptive ESaaS model over a 10-year period, Vertiv and Telefónica’s collaboration is set to surpass its projected savings by over 20%.
