Data Centre Consolidation/Upgrade/Refresh Project of the Year
Entry Description
What is novel about the product /process or innovation:
>Expansion and doubling of capacity to 1.5MW, the largest carrier neutral data centre in West Africa and maintaining the track record of 100% uptime since launch in a challenging infrastructure environment.
>Project execution during the global pandemic COVID-19 with supply chain complications. Dealing with complexities of HSE, C-19 protocols. Multiple delivery partners locally in Nigeria, South Africa, and United Kingdom. Achieving zero C-19 health issues.
>High quality and BRG modules having to be built, packaged for shipment across the world.
>Top floor to be laid on the existing data centre with attendant complexities of a full existing facility, with no disruptive vibrations.
>Migrating power infrastructure from N+2 to 3N2 infrastructure, cut over without one second of facility downtime or adverse customer implications through thorough risk management and flawless execution.
>Complicated movement of facility modules from port to facility location over 26 KMs of urban roads.

How does the product or process break with conventional ideas or processes in its field?
• Critical issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Implementing novel 3N2 architecture in a challenging infrastructure environment, with total power architecture modification.
• Modular technology that provides a leading PUE of 1.45 average in the region, unprecedented.
• The proven modular construction enables rapid scalability to customer demands at high quality, enabling supply chain risks to be mitigated. Customers at Rack Centre can increase their footprints as business growth demands.

How does it go beyond marginal improvements on something that already exists?
The key design consideration was implementing the proposed transition from exiting 2N to 3N2 power infrastructure configuration. The challenge was the non-negotiable need to cut over the existing live data centre and distribute IT load to the new power configuration at 0 service downtime or client service implications.
We accomplished the high-risk endeavour power transition from 2N to 3N2 with the unmatched proper Risk Assessment and Method Statement with zero downtime to client service.

How do customers benefit from product/process or innovation?
Expansion of the LGS 1 facility brings with it an additional Meet Me Room providing higher carrier neutral resilience and provides comprehensive carrier neutral ecosystem benefits with over 40 carriers / Internet Service Providers (ISP) and a diverse Cloud neutral marketplace. With three diverse fibre routes into the facility, it has become the largest and most connected carrier neutral digital infrastructure hub in West Africa and West Centre Africa and with every country on the Atlantic coast of Africa directly connected and halving the latency between South Africa and Europe. As a key Tier III Constructed Facility Certified hosting location for the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria, it addresses the growing need for proven reliable hosting, flexible interconnection and enabling companies to advance their digital transformation.
