Entry Description
Background
Our existing customer, Datum Data Centres, had a requirement to develop the first floor of its three-storey data centre property at its site on the Cody Technology Park, Farnborough.
Following the successful completion of the pre-construction phase Keysource was appointed as the
main contractor to undertake the project.

Introduction
The project included the creation of a new data hall and associated ancillary areas, providing an
additional 285 new rack positions and 800kW IT load capacity, scalable up to 1,500kW (1.5MW). The
facility will support mixed density applications through a flexible power distribution system and high
efficiency cooling approach.
The scalable design provides diverse power and redundant cooling. The project included the upgrade
of the power supply to the site, coordinating with the local DNO, installation of new transformers,
generators, UPS (Static & flywheel) and busbar distribution to and inside the data hall.

Key Highlights:
• The cooling system deployed uses through-wall air delivery, with contained exhaust air return,
redundant free cooling chillers combined with Keysource control philosophy to optimise the
efficiency.
• New protection and security systems protect the space including watermist, VESDA, CCTV
and access control.
• A new state of the art ACIS BMS, by Airedale, provides comprehensive infrastructure and
rack power monitoring.
• On completion full integrated system testing was undertaken with load simulation to prove the
design and operation of the upgraded facility.

Key Challenges
There was a need to incorporate existing infrastructure which had been deployed to support a higher capacity demand in earlier phases. This required careful planning and coordination to manage end user critical load to complete the works, which was successfully executed without risk to client service availability.
In addition the specification included maintaining a sub 1.3 PUE, at both design and part load
operation, which in this project was achieved without the use of adiabatic cooling process, mitigating additional site water usage and associated storage systems.
The project was initiated in the summer of 2020, shortly after the first wave of the Coronavirus
pandemic. COVID restrictions created additional delivery challenges which were overcome by
expanding the site and available facilities to maintain social distancing, detailed programming of
works carried out in areas to limit working personnel and high levels of site cleanliness including daily inductions and people checks.
Post Brexit changes were also a factor which impacted some of the procurement of items from
overseas. This required diligent management to avoid impacts to the critical path of the project
programme.

Conclusion & Testimonial
The project was successfully completed on time and on budget in October 2020, ready for end user
occupation and use.
