1. Demonstrate specific innovations

Huawei OceanStor Distributed Storage has realized unified management of four storage protocols: block, file, object, and HDFS. The storage converges three protocols (file, object, HDFS) for unified access. That means users can access the same data using any of of the three access methods. Also, the system supports object and file storage compression and deduplication capabilities with no external components, like compression card. The system performance and utilization ratio with Erasure Coding is higher than in other vendors’ systems. A new hardware node for distributed storage (Atlantic node) allows to achieve 2.4 Petabyte of raw capacity in 5 unit enclosure (as of the end of April 2020)

2. Demonstrate how our products are different from traditional products

Traditionally, vendors either support four protocol unified management without interoperability (Ceph), or implement gateway-based solution on file or block storage (Dell EMC). While the first approach leads to high operational inefficiencies, the second impacts performance and does not provide full semantics support for different protocols. As for compression and deduplication commonly used in all-flash arrays, even if this functionality is present in distributed file and object storage among offerings on the market, competitors achieve it through a separate compression card which significantly increases installation costs. As for Erasure Coding utilization rate, Huawei OceanStor Distributed Storage can go over 90% - significantly higher than other vendors–without sacrificing the system performance. The density of Atlantic storage nodes is 20-30% higher than its competitors (Dell EMC).

3. The demo product is not the evolution of the previous product, but a disruptive change.

Four protocols unified management and three protocols full interoperability with native semantics is a radical change in the way traditional on premise storages work. A Pacific hardware node for distributed object storage is a system build from the scratch to cater to voluminous data processing needs.

4. Demonstrate what value this innovation will bring to customers

Huawei OceanStor Distributed Storage allows save capital expenditures for higher resource utilization and protocol convergence, operational expenditures through hardware resources consolidation. Thus, traditionally, a few copies of the same data should exist within the realm of each protocol to allow access to the storage resources which leads to multiple copies of the same data in the system, and slow processes because of frequent data transfers. With Huawei OceanStor Distributed Storage system, customers can eliminate such inefficiencies.
In the data processing process with high capacity requirements like in case of automatic driving scenarios, the S3 object protocol serves data import needs, the HDFS protocol runs at data pre-processing stage, and the NFS / CIFS file protocol comes into play for data training and simulation. Through integration of different protocols, the overall process efficiency improves by over 30%.
