New Design/Build Data Centre Project of the Year
The growth of traditional telecom services of the customer slowed down, and Batelco was seeking transformation in terms of operation strategies. After strategic decision-making, Batelco decided to focus on digital transformation and invest in data centers to provide leasing services for governments, OTT players, colo companies, and potential customers. Batelco had received the tenant's leasing requirements, and the tenant needed to complete service rollout within 16 months. The cabinet usage of the existing data center of Batelco was almost saturated. Batelco was in urgent need of a new data center.
Batelco faced the following challenges when building a new data center:
1. Capital pressure
According to the service plan, it is estimated that more than 1000 cabinets are required. One-time deployment will bring financial pressure to Batelco. After the deployment, a low rental rate will result in asset waste and unsatisfactory return on investment.
2. Construction Mode
The construction period of traditional buildings is longer than 32 months, which cannot meet tenants' requirements. At the same time, one-time deployment of buildings at the initial stage imposes great financial pressure.
The container solution has a simple appearance, poor quality, and poor physical protection capabilities, which will make it difficult to attract high-end customers in the future.
3. High PUE of existing data centers
The PUE of most existing data centers is greater than 2.0, resulting in high power consumption and huge electricity fees.
However, the tenant is ready. If services cannot be brought online in time, Batelco may turn to competitors.
Batelco is in urgent need of an innovative construction solution that features low investment, fast deployment, high reliability and good appearance, and low PUE.
•How did the solution address the challenges and were there any particularly innovative aspects that made it stand out?:
Huawei prefabricated data center uses prefabricated steel building modules as the platform to carry subsystems such as the power supply and distribution system, cooling system, and management system. The prefabricated modules are the basic units to deploy the data center. All pre-fab. modules are prefabricated and pre-tested in the factory. Only simple assembling is required onsite to complete the construction of the pre-fab. modular steel structure data center.
Huawei prefabricated modular data center has the following advantages:
1. Supports phased deployment, flexible capacity expansion, and reduced initial investment.
2. Compared with the traditional building construction mode, pre-fab. modular DC effectively reduces the E2E delivery time by more than 50%.
3. The 4.15 m high modules and external decorations are used to provide an excellent visual appearance and internal use experience for the prefabricated steel structure data center.
4. With efficient power supply and distribution system, cooling solution, architecture design, and AI technology, the PUE of the new data center is much lower than that of the existing data center.
•What major challenges were faced during the project and how were they overcome?:
Bahrain Batelco DC project is the first application of Huawei pre-fab. modular DC in this region.
1. Strict government approval and local admission checks for electricity and fire protection.
The project team quickly demonstrated the complete and reliable certification system and excellent quality of the product, and quickly obtained the admission recognition.
2. Difficult delivery in high-temperature and sandstorm conditions
Use the digital tool BIM to assist delivery and improve delivery efficiency.
•What tangible benefits has the organization seen as a result of the project's implementation?
Huawei prefabricated modular data center reduces the CAPEX by 10% compared with the traditional data center. The end-to-end delivery time is 14 months, and services are rolled out 18 months in advance, meeting tenants' service rollout requirements and bringing benefits in advance. The PUE is 1.7 and the PUE of existing data centers is 2.1, reducing power consumption by 24%. In addition, Huawei's efficient digital intelligent management system is used to improve O&M efficiency and asset utilization, increasing revenue by millions of dollars in 10 years.
According to the overall project estimation, the project ROI of Huawei prefabricated modular data center is two years earlier than that of the traditional data center.
