Data is being created at a rate never before seen in human history. In fact, over the next two years, many organizations are expected to quadruple the amount of data that needs to be stored. To keep up with this explosion of data, many organizations have been adding more and more expensive Primary storage to their infrastructures, increasing costs. But more than 80 percent of this data is inactive and being stored on the wrong tier of storage, costing organizations millions of dollars a year [1]. Spectra Logic’s StorCycle storage management software is the answer to deploying a modern storage lifecycle management workflow that solves the challenges associated with exponential data growth and how to automatically identify, migrate, access and protect this data. StorCycle delivers affordable long-term protection and access for data that is no longer active, but deemed indispensable to an organization. The software automatically scans data on the Primary Tier of storage, identifying inactive data based on age, size or other user-defined policies. StorCycle migrates this data to a lower cost tier of storage, called the Perpetual Tier, which can include any combination of cloud storage, object storage disk, network-attached storage (NAS) and tape. The Perpetual Tier holds inactive data, which is tracked, protected and available at a future time if needed. This tier is also used for data distribution, backup storage, archive storage, disaster recovery and more. An easy-to-use, affordable and efficient software solution built specifically to identify inactive data that consumes expensive primary storage capacity and migrate it to a lower cost storage tier, StorCycle can help organizations reduce the overall cost of storing data by up to 70 percent.

StorCycle software provides users with two effortless methods of migrating data – Project Archive and Auto Migrate. Unique to StorCycle, the Project Archive method is used for completed data sets that will change minimally, if at all, but cannot be deleted, such as machine-generated data, completed experiment output, videos, etc. When a project is completed and is no longer in the edit or creation phase, StorCycle can migrate it from the Primary Tier to the Perpetual Tier via the project archive function. Project Archive is also useful for large data sets which may be moved immediately after creation or collection. The Auto Migrate method identifies inactive files based on age, size and file type. User defined policies can then seamlessly move those files to the Perpetual Tier. StorCycle’s ability to easily and automatically migrate data off of Primary Tier to the Perpetual Tier is invaluable – essentially extending primary storage to provide limitless capacity at a fraction of the cost.

With the use of HTML Links or Symbolic Links, and a web-based search, data in the Perpetual Tier is easily accessible by users in a semi-transparent or transparent manner. This unique ability assures that users have quick and easy access to their data even after it has been migrated. The software offers the best of all worlds; IT administrators are able to free up valuable primary storage space, reducing costs and backup windows, while users can continue to access their data with no interruptions.

StorCycle software stores data in open formats so that data is always accessible. The software can be used to make copies of primary storage, leaving the original data in place. StorCycle can make additional copies of data for disaster recovery purposes, including on tape for physically separated air-gapped copies that protect data from ransomware and other types of malware. Data can also be migrated to the cloud for sharing and collaboration and to enable cloud workflows.

Dubbed by George Crump, founder of U.S.-based analyst firm Storage Switzerland, as “the most cost-effective data management software on the market today”, StorCycle can be implemented as standalone software using public cloud storage or existing network-attached storage, or combined with Spectra storage hardware to create a complete storage solution.
