Entry Description
In addition to using ready-made solution products for energy efficiency, efficiency can be achieved by designing products that increase efficiency on the existing infrastructure.

We use Compressor based CRAC units for air conditioning in our Datacenter. While the average annual air temperature is 11 degrees in the regions where the datacenter is located, the air temperature rises to 40 degrees or even in the summer season.
During warm months, surrounding air, to air-cooled condenser of CRAC unit influence energy consumption and cooling capacity of cooling system. Because energy consumption decreases between %1 to %2 when surrounding air to the condenser drops 1 celcius degree. At the same time, cooling capacity of cooling unit increases between %1 and %2 when surrounding air to the condenser drops 1 celcius degree.
Considering this seasonal effect, we designed a product on air-cooled condenser of CRAC unit that will minimize the energy efficiency reducing effect of the increase in seasonal air temperature. Thus, we aimed to increase energy efficiency in terms of both cooling and energy consumption.

Our solution, which we call the pre-cooling unit aiming at energy saving, is used at our cooled data center environment with Compressor based CRAC unit.
The pre-cooling unit evaporatively cools the inlet air of air-cooled condensers at very low cost. Pre-cooling unit consists of evaporative cooling pad and water circulation pump. The evaporative cooling pads, which are installed very simply in front of any air-cooled condensers, are kept wet by a small water circulation pump.
The existing fans of the condensers pass the outside air over the wet pads, bringing warm air to the wet thermometer temperature. This cooling air passes through the condenser pad.

Combined with our current Compressor based CRAC units, which we call pre-cooling unit, it offers low energy consumption, high efficiency solutions.
Also, considering that the pre-cooling unit is made up of inexpensive and easy-to-supply materials, systems designed for all Compressor based CRAC units are feasible. So that, maintenance and spare parts costs are low and there is no firm dependency in case of faulty.
Other important advantageous aspects of our application;
• The condenser is not wetted and is not subject to deformation due to corrosion
• The condenser does not contain lime.
• Prevents the condenser from being dirty quickly by filtering out the air that the condenser is exposed to. This makes it easier to cool the refrigerant in the cooling system
• The cheapest system solution
• The condenser does not come out of warranty
• Extends the life of compressor of cooling and the condanser
During warm months, daytime outdoor temperature gets higher up to 40C celcius degree. Average daytime temperature is around 33C celcius degree at that times. When not using the pre-cooling unit, the CRAC Unit energy consumption reaches up to 25 kWh depending on the outside air temperature and average of energy consumption of it is 21.97 kWh. When the pre-cooling unit is being activated, the average of CRAC Unit energy consumption drops to 19.41 kWh.
Especially in peak power demand at temperatures 35 degrees Celsius and above, this application saves up to 23% in energy consumption by integrating the pre-cooling unit into the existing Compressor based CRAC unit.
Also, the operation of the condenser is relaxed, the cooling performance of the condenser increases, the operating performance of the system increases, the operating pressure drops, the life of the system and the compressor is longer and the risk of failure decreases.
