Vertiv and Telefónica’s Global Alliance Drastically Improves Data Centre Efficiency & Reduces Carbon Footprint
Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year
In February 2018, Vertiv and Telefónica announced a long-term global alliance to boost energy savings through customised infrastructure solutions. In support of this partnership, Vertiv will provide Energy Savings as a Service (ESaaS) across Telefónica’s core and access sites in Europe and Latin America, covering all facets from initial site assessment to comprehensive maintenance services over the next ten years.
ESaaS is a disruptive offering that will drastically alter the way large operators optimise their infrastructure. Vertiv’s agreement with Telefónica involves designing, investing, implementing, operating and maintaining the infrastructure that achieves energy savings to benefit both organisations.
Over the course of the project, Vertiv experts will conduct energy audits and deliver wide-ranging assessment reports outlining projected KPIs as well as energy savings for each site. The reports comprise a series of recommendations for optimising the performance, capacity, availability and efficiency of critical infrastructure, ultimately increasing energy savings. Vertiv will fully finance the project as part of the ESaaS contract, providing complete support from consultancy and execution to 24/7 monitoring and maintenance services, requiring no capital expenditure (CAPEX) from Telefónica; essentially eliminating the need to buy equipment which would traditionally be the case.
The first part of the project that took on this ESaaS model was the construction of the Telefónica Concepción building in Madrid, Spain, completed in October 2019. Considered to be one of the most significant buildings for Telefónica Spain, the Concepción building provides fibre-optic access to more than 100,000 households and bears significant energy saving results. What’s more, the building includes two main data centre rooms and network hubs that aggregate all network traffic. In fact, this equipment demonstrates Vertiv’s solution, which includes the installation of cutting-edge cooling and power equipment as well as a monitoring system which allows the online analysis and mitigation of all critical devices. The data is then collated from these devices to support pre-emptive measures and decisions. The ongoing remote monitoring provides Vertiv with a wealth of Big Data Analytics. It is combined with data from the Spanish Grid, and once again reported back to Telefónica every month to outline energy efficiencies and savings made.
With a total energy consumption of the Concepción building currently around 700 kW, and a yearly electricity bill of 500,000€/year, Telefónica will reap the following benefits:
● Energy consumption will be reduced to 525 kW within 3 months of deployment
● Largest energy usage from data centre cooling (technical rooms) already reduced to up to 85%
● Expected savings amount to over 25% of the overall cost, roughly totaling
1 gigawatt/hour per year
Nevertheless, projects such as these come with their challenges.
One of the most evident for Vertiv was to reduce Telefónica’s energy consumption and achieve the maximum possible energy savings in the shortest possible time. This enables Telefónica to continue working towards becoming the most efficient telecommunications network in the market in terms of energy and carbon intensity. The project also demanded a cultural shift from Telefónica to address energy efficiency and savings by thoroughly assessing the environments in which its technologies would best perform. Essentially, the Telefónica Concepción project has not only gone beyond merely allowing Telefónica to improve its energy efficiency and savings, but it has also made it possible to increase telecommunications reliability for all of its clients whilst incorporating Tier IV features.
Vertiv and Telefónica have been business partners for more than 20 years, working closely together to deliver a broad range of innovative solutions to support Telefónica’s network sites across the world. By entering this new global agreement, Vertiv and Telefónica have aligned their vision for improving efficiency, reducing carbon footprint, and enabling innovation across the globe.
